SUU women’s basketball opens season with exhibition victory

The SUU women’s basketball team opened the season with an exhibition win over Northern New Mexico College on Monday night.
The Lady Thunderbirds used an early run to take a nine-point lead into the second period.

Northern New Mexico fought back in the second quarter, outscoring SUU 17-13 during the period. Despite the quarter advantage, the Lady Thunderbirds took a 40-35 lead into halftime. Rebecca Cardenas led SUU with eight points in the first half.

The Lady Thunderbirds exploded in the third quarter, scoring 35 points during the period and taking a commanding 75-51 lead.

SUU was outscored again in the fourth quarter, but maintained the lead and cruised to an 86-67 victory.

Peyton Torgerson and Whitney Johnson led the Lady Thunderbirds, each scoring 14 points in the contest. Ashley Larsen chipped in 11 points for SUU.

The Lady Thunderbirds will host Concordia in its final exhibition game on Friday night. Tipoff is slated for 5 p.m. and can be viewed on Pluto TV Channel 236. Admission to the game is free.

SUU will begin regular season play on November 10, traveling to Provo to take on BYU.
