The Thunderbird volleyball team fell to in-state rival Weber State on Saturday, losing 3 sets to 0 on Senior Day in Cedar City.
Weber State (8-18, 6-8 BSC) gained an early 3-0 advantage in the first set, but SUU (7-19, 2-12 BSC) responded by going on a 7-0 run to take the lead. After a back-and-forth swing evened up the score at 11, the Wildcats responded by going on a 13-0 run, taking a commanding lead, winning the first set, 25-14.
Weber State continued its strong run of play in the second set, gaining a 12-4 advantage and never relinquishing it, claiming the set 25-15.
The third set started the same as the previous two, with the Wildcats taking an early lead. The Thunderbirds battled to make the set close, tying the set, only to see Weber State finish strong and win the set 25-19, clinching a straight sets victory.
Janet Kalaniuvalu led SUU, registering 11 kills. Macky Fifita had six kills and 11 digs for the Thunderbirds.
This was the final home match for seniors Macky Fifita and MaCail Evans.
Fifita leads the team in kills (305), as well as digs (321) this season.
Evans has registered 222 kills this season, and leads the squad with a .327 hitting percentage. She has also has 127 blocks this season, which ranks 12th in the country.
SUU will finish up the season on the road, taking on Northern Colorado on Thursday, November 9, at 7 p.m. Their final game will be played on Saturday at Northern Arizona at 1 p.m.
