SUU went to Flagstaff, Ariz. on Friday knowing they needed a win to stay in contention for a Big Sky Championship berth, and that’s exactly what they did.
SUU scored the only goal for either side in the match, coming away with a 1-0 victory over Northern Arizona.
With the victory, SUU improves to 5-12 overall and 4-5 in Big Sky play, drawing even with NAU for the sixth and final spot in the upcoming Big Sky Championship.
The Thunderbirds’ goal came in the 21st minute, when Brielle Bourgeois delivered a pass through two NAU defenders right to Ally Thimsen, who fired the ball into the back of the net for the record-breaking goal.
Not only was the goal the game-winner for SUU, but it gave Thimsen the 20th goal of her career, putting her atop the charts as the Thunderbirds all-time leader in goals scored.
Thimsen has cemented her place as SUU’s greatest player in school history, adding 2015 honorable mention and 2016 second team All-Big Sky Conference selections to being the program’s all-time leader in goals.
SUU plays on the road Sunday, taking the field against Sacramento State in the regular season finale for the Thunderbirds. The game is slated to kickoff at 2 p.m., and can be watched on Pluto TV channel 233.
If SUU wins, they will have to wait until next weekend to find out if they will participate in the Big Sky Championship when the regular season concludes for most of the conference’s teams.
