When most people think of fashion, they think of clothing and runways. Some think of hair and makeup. Few, however, think of fragrance.
Mark Sherratt is not one of those people.
The Cedar City native started Musk and Hustle three-and-a-half years ago. The company seeks to make oil-based colognes that smell similar to designer brands for a fraction of the price.
“There’s only a couple of things that can be taken into account when you first meet somebody,” Sherratt said. “Of course, your personality, but as far as your physical presence, you’ve got the way you look and the way you smell. Other than those two things, there’s not a lot to take into account as far as your first impression of someone.”
Last year, the company launched their first 24 fragrances, and with a new Kickstarter campaign starting on Friday, they will release another 24.
In addition to creating the colognes that mimic scents from brands such as Versace, Armani, Gucci and Chanel, Musk and Hustle is updating their Nitro Stubbies, which are 1.75-mL cologne containers.
The previous models used glass roller balls, but they would get stuck, so they are now made of stainless steel. The Stubbies are packaged in tins that can hold 12, and two containers, which can hold all of the new fragrances, are smaller than a can of soup.
Keeping with Musk and Hustle tradition, the colognes are oil-based instead of alcohol-based. Although the scents aren’t as strong, they last longer.
“Whatever your outstretched arm is, you shouldn’t be able to smell someone’s fragrance beyond that,” Sherratt said. “Within that area, it should be soft and not overpowering. The cool thing about oil is that you roll it on and it’s not super strong to begin with, but it continues to last for a long period of time.”
The oil-based products use “the exact same grade of raw materials, the same origin and composition of essential oils, and the same unique, exotic, and expensive raw materials as more expensive and less concentrated designer spray colognes,” according to the Kickstarter campaign.
These materials include geranium, cedarwood, lemon, star anise, nutmeg, juniper, peppercorn and orange.
